The 1899 PBK Book Award, which honors the founding of the first Wisconsin chapter of Phi Beta Kappa on February 2, 1899, recognizes high school juniors and seniors who exemplify Phi Beta Kappa’s motto, “the love of learning is the guide of life.” Selected scholars are awarded a meaningful book at a reception during the fall semester on the UW-Madison campus.
Student recipients are selected by their high schools for this honor. Students awardees are passionate about learning across a range of subjects/topics; are excellent scholars; and are involved community members.

James Madison Memorial High School 2017 Recipients
Casey Gregorich-Trevor
Casey, a James Madison Memorial High School senior, is an outstanding student, earning a 4.0 GPA. Casey is an active, engaged member of his community. Casey is considering a college major in economics, physics, or environmental science.

Emma Hubbard
Emma, a James Madison Memorial High School student, has been involved in athletics, many clubs, and continues to earn a 4.0 GPA while taking difficult courses.

Caty Abitz
Caty, a LaFollette High School senior, helped to develop and lead the Lancer Squared Club, which ensures all students, regardless of disability status, have an ally at school. Caty participated in athletics, music, and community service.

Norma "Nell" Williamson-Shaffer
Nell, a Madison West High School senior, participated in synchronized swimming, the school newspaper, and service. She has been a tutor in math and physics and a teaching assistant for advanced math and Art Metals.

Noah Zamzow-Schmidt
Noah, a Madison West High School student, is a gifted mathematician and vocalist. Noah has competed in state competitions for chess, and chose to focus his time on math, science, and running.

Grace Richmond
Grace, a Sun Prairie High School student, works in a science laboratory at UW-Madison and has participated in many activities, including Academic Decathlon, German Club, and Amnesty Club, all while maintaining a 4.0 GPA.

Joseph, a Sun Prairie High School senior, is one of two National Merit Semifinalists at Sun Prairie. Joseph participated in many activities and service, including Academic Decathlon, ASL Club, and Link Crew while maintaining a 4.0 GPA.
